What aari work is

Aari takes its name from the aari — a fine hooked needle, closer to a crochet hook than a sewing needle. The hook is worked through stretched fabric to pull the thread up in a continuous chain stitch, which is why aari work reads as flowing lines rather than separate stitches. It is the technique behind much of the fine chain-stitch embroidery associated with Kashmir and Gujarat.

The chain-stitch line is what distinguishes it. Where satin stitch fills an area solidly and resham draws in loose strokes, aari builds an unbroken looping line that can turn corners and curve without stopping — which is why it suits vines, florals and outlines so well.

Beige as a base for aari

Beige does something specific for work like this: it stays out of the way. On a strong colour, fine chain-stitch has to fight the ground to be seen, and much of the line is lost from any distance.
