What Maheshwari is

Maheshwari is a weaving tradition from Maheshwar, a town on the Narmada in Madhya Pradesh. The cloth is typically a cotton and silk mix, which is what gives it its particular character — lighter and crisper than pure cotton, with a soft sheen rather than a matte surface, and enough body to hold a shape without stiffness.

It is best known for its borders and for geometric patterning drawn from the carvings of the fort at Maheshwar.

Printed, with no separate work

The pattern is printed. There is no embroidery, no zari, and no added work on this suit.

We say so plainly because "premium work detailing" is the kind of phrase that gets attached to everything and means nothing. What you are paying for here is the fabric and the print — not surface embellishment.

White on black

The most legible combination there is. A white print on a black ground reads clearly from a distance and photographs without the pattern muddying, which softer pairings often do.

Dry clean only. Maheshwari is a fine blended cloth and does not take a home wash well — washing flattens the finish that gives it its sheen, and a black ground shows every mark a bad wash leaves.
