This is genuine hand block print

Bagru is a block printing tradition from Rajasthan. The pattern is stamped onto the cloth with carved wooden blocks, pressed by hand, one impression at a time across the length of the fabric.

We say hand block print because it is hand block print. Most printed cotton at this price is machine printed — a roller or a screen, identical every repeat. This is not that, and the difference is visible if you know where to look.

What hand printing looks like up close

Slight irregularity in the repeat. The occasional impression heavier or lighter than its neighbour. Small variations in how the colour sits.

None of that is a fault. It is the evidence of the method, and it is the reason two pieces of the same design are never quite identical. If you want a perfectly uniform repeat, buy a machine print — it will be cheaper and it will be flawless.

Cream and blue

The base is cream; the print is blue. That way round matters — a pale ground lets the block impressions read clearly, which is how block print is meant to be seen.

No lining needed

The cotton is opaque enough to wear on its own — one less layer, one less line on the tailoring bill.

How to wash it

Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Dry in shade. Wash separately the first time.

Block printed cotton releases colour on the first wash more than a machine print does. Washing it alone that first time is the whole precaution — particularly here, where a cream ground sits right beside the blue.

Care

Hand wash only, cold water, mild detergent. Dry in shade — direct sun fades block print faster than anything else. Wash separately the first time. Iron on medium while slightly damp.
