Sanganeri, and why the motifs are small

Sanganeri is a block printing tradition from Sanganer, near Jaipur. It is known for fine, small-scale floral motifs — delicate repeats rather than bold statement blocks, which is what distinguishes it from the heavier bagru style.

Small motifs are harder to print by hand, not easier. Each block is smaller, so more impressions are needed to cover the same cloth, and every one of them has to line up with its neighbours.

This is genuine hand block print

Carved wooden blocks, inked and pressed onto the cloth by hand, one impression at a time. Not a screen, not a roller.

Expect slight irregularity in the repeat and small variations in colour. That is the method showing. A machine print would be flawless and would cost less.

No lining needed

The cotton is opaque enough to wear on its own — one less layer, one less line on the tailoring bill.

How to wash it

Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Dry in shade. Wash separately the first time.

Block printed cotton releases more colour on its first wash than a machine print does. Washing it alone that first time is the whole precaution.

Who this suit is for

Everyday summer wear. Sanganeri's fine motifs read as texture from a distance and reveal themselves close up, which makes this a quieter choice than a bold block print — good for work and for days when you would rather not be looked at.

Not the one if you want a strong pattern. For bolder blocks, our bagru suits are the better answer.

Care

Hand wash only, cold water, mild detergent. Dry in shade — direct sun fades block print faster than anything else. Wash separately the first time. Iron on medium while slightly damp.
