About Tanchoi

Tanchoi is a satin-weave technique from Banaras in which the pattern is built into the cloth itself, using the weft rather than added threads. The result is a dense, tonal design with a smooth reverse — no loose float threads on the back, which is what separates it from most brocades. It gives the surface a quiet richness that shifts as the light moves, rather than a bright metallic shine.

Here the tanchoi is worked tone on tone in green, so the pattern reads as texture rather than contrast, and the dabka at the neckline stands out against it.

The Dabka Work

Dabka is a coiled metallic wire, couched onto the fabric by hand. It gives a raised, defined line with a soft matte shine that flat thread cannot produce. Here it is kept to the neckline, so the woven pattern carries the rest of the shirt without the two competing.

Stitching & Size

This is an unstitched suit set, so you can have it tailored exactly to your measurements. The fabric can be stitched up to size 5XL. Point out the neckline dabka to your tailor before cutting, so the neck is shaped around it.

Occasion

Made for wedding functions and festive occasions — mehendi, sangeet, engagement ceremonies and family weddings. Also a good choice for Karva Chauth, for the sargi morning or the evening itself.

Care

Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft cotton bag, away from direct sunlight. Use a low-heat iron with a pressing cloth — organza marks easily — and never iron directly over the dabka work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this suit stitched or unstitched?
It is unstitched. You receive the shirt, bottom and dupatta fabric, which you can get tailored to your own measurements.

What is the largest size this can be stitched to?
The fabric can be stitched up to size 5XL.

What is tanchoi fabric?
A satin-weave technique from Banaras where the pattern is built into the cloth using the weft rather than added threads. It gives a dense, tonal design with a smooth reverse and no float threads on the back.

How is tanchoi different from brocade?
Brocade carries extra threads that float loose on the reverse. Tanchoi weaves the pattern into the cloth itself, so the back stays smooth and the design reads as tonal texture rather than bright metallic contrast.

What is dabka work?
Dabka is a coiled metallic wire stitched onto the fabric by hand, giving a raised, defined line with a soft matte shine.

Where is the handwork?
At the neckline of the shirt. The rest of the shirt's design is woven into the tanchoi itself.

What fabric is this suit made from?
The shirt is tanchoi, the dupatta is embroidered organza, and the bottom is muslin silk.

Is the whole dupatta worked?
Yes. The embroidery runs across the full dupatta, with lace along all four sides.

Is lining included with this suit?
No. Lining fabric is not included and needs to be purchased separately.

What occasions is this suit suitable for?
Wedding functions and festivities — mehendi, sangeet, engagements, family weddings, and Karva Chauth.

How should I care for this suit?
Dry clean only. Iron on low heat with a pressing cloth and never directly over the dabka work.
