Dori work, and why it suits ivory

Dori is cord stitched onto the fabric — a raised line rather than flat embroidery. You can run a finger along it and feel where it sits.

That is exactly what an ivory suit needs. On an off-white ground there is no colour contrast to carry a design, so the work has to be visible by its shape. Raised cord catches light along its edges and throws a faint shadow, which is how the pattern reads at all. Flat thread embroidery in ivory-on-ivory would almost disappear.

Ivory is the hardest colour to get right

An off-white cotton has nowhere to hide. There is no print to break up the surface and no depth of colour to disguise a coarse weave — the fabric has to be good, because the fabric is all you are looking at.

Mul is the answer to that. It is the finest cotton weave we stock, and on an ivory ground the fineness is visible rather than implied.

About mul cotton

Mul is soft, fine and genuinely breathable — the fabric for real heat, not the one that only claims to be. It creases, as fine cotton does, and softens with every wash.

The bottom is taffeta rather than mul, which gives a salwar or trouser the body it needs.

Who this suit is for

Daytime functions in warm weather where understatement is the point — a puja, a morning wedding event, a formal lunch. Ivory takes gold, pearl and oxidised silver equally.

Not the one if you are hard on your clothes. Ivory shows everything and this is dry clean only. If you want something forgiving, our black or brown mul suits are the better answer.

Stitching

Stitching is a separate service, charged on top of the fabric price. Message us with what you need and we will confirm the cost and the timeline. Stitched orders take 7–15 working days before dispatch.

Care

Dry clean only. Mul cotton on its own could take a gentle hand wash, but dori work cannot — the cord is stitched down and pulls loose when the fabric is tugged or wrung.

Never iron directly over the dori. The cord is raised, so an iron flattens it — and once flattened, the shadow that makes the pattern visible is gone. Press around the work, or from the reverse with a cloth in between.
