What jamdani is

Jamdani is a weaving technique rather than a fabric. The motifs are not printed on afterwards or embroidered over the top — they are built into the cloth on the loom, with the weaver adding extra threads by hand as the base fabric is woven. Each motif is worked in individually.

That is why jamdani looks the way it does: the patterns appear to float on the surface, slightly denser than the ground around them, and the reverse of the fabric shows the working rather than a clean printed face. It is among the most labour-intensive weaving traditions still practised, which is why a jamdani piece is priced above a printed one of the same fibre.

The knot work dupatta

The dupatta is Chanderi cotton with knot work — small knotted details worked across the cloth, giving a raised, textured surface you can feel with your fingers. Chanderi itself is a fine fabric with a slight translucency and a soft sheen, so the knots read clearly against a smooth ground.

Pairing a woven shirt with a textured dupatta rather than a matching one is a considered choice: two different kinds of surface interest, neither competing with the other.

Lavender
