Hand block printed kalamkari

Kalamkari is a narrative print tradition from South India — figures, florals and borders drawn from temple cloth. This one is hand block printed: carved wooden blocks, inked and pressed onto the cloth by hand, one impression at a time.

We say so because most kalamkari at this price is machine printed. We carry both and we tell you which is which — our maroon Chanderi kalamkari suit is a machine print, and its page says so.

No lining needed

The cotton is opaque enough to wear on its own. That saves you a layer, saves you heat in summer, and saves you a line on your tailoring bill.

Mustard and cream

Kalamkari motifs need a warm ground to sit on; they were developed for natural-dyed cloth, and they look wrong on a cold white. Mustard with cream is close to how the tradition actually looks, which is why it reads more authentic than the same print on a bright base.

What hand printing looks like

Repeats that are not mechanically exact. Impressions heavier in one place than another. Small shifts in colour along the length.

That is the method showing, not a fault. Perfectly uniform kalamkari is machine kalamkari.

How to wash it

Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Dry in shade. Wash separately the first time.

Block printed cotton releases more colour on its first wash than machine print, and there is cream here for it to release onto. Washing it alone that first time is the whole precaution.

Who this suit is for

Everyday summer wear with something behind it. Warm, unshowy, and more interesting close up than from across a room.

Not the one if you want uniformity, or a bold colour. This is a quiet suit with detail in it.

Stitching

Stitching is a separate service, charged on top of the fabric price. Message us with what you need and we will confirm the cost and the timeline. Stitched orders take 7–15 working days before dispatch.

Care

Hand wash only, cold water, mild detergent. Dry in shade — direct sun fades block print faster than anything else. Wash separately the first time. Iron on medium while slightly damp.

Delivery

Ready stock, dispatched within 48 working hours. Delivery in 3–7 business days across India with a tracking link. Shipping is calculated at checkout for orders under ₹3,000. Cash on Delivery is available at a flat ₹150.

Frequently asked questions

Is this hand block printed or machine printed?

Hand block printed. Carved wooden blocks, pressed by hand, one impression at a time.

What is kalamkari?

A narrative print tradition from South India, with motifs drawn from temple cloth — figures, florals and decorative borders.

How is this different from your other kalamkari suits?

This one is hand block printed on cotton, in mustard and cream. Our maroon kalamkari Chanderi suit is machine printed and its page says so; our red kalamkari cotton suit is also hand block printed.

Does it need a lining?

No. The cotton is opaque enough to wear without one.

Which pieces are printed?

The bottom and dupatta carry the kalamkari print. The shirt is plain cotton.

Why is the print uneven in places?

Because a person pressed each impression. Irregular repeats and slight colour variation are inherent to hand block printing and are not defects.

What fabric is it?

Cotton, for all three pieces.

Can I machine wash it?

No — hand wash only, cold water, mild detergent.

Will the colour run?

Some will release on the first wash. Wash it separately that first time — particularly with cream in the set.

How much fabric is included?

2.5 metres each for the shirt, bottom and dupatta.

Is this suit stitched?

No, it is unstitched — three fabric pieces. Stitching is available from us as a separate paid service.

What is the largest size it can be stitched to?

5XL.

Is shipping free on this suit?

No. Free shipping starts at ₹3,000 prepaid and this suit is ₹1,299, so shipping is calculated at checkout.

Is Cash on Delivery available?

Yes, at a flat ₹150 charge.

Can I return it if I change my mind?

No. We do not accept returns for change of mind. Claims are limited to a manufacturing defect, transit damage, or the wrong item being sent, with a 360° unboxing video sent to care@studiojazzldh.com within 24 hours of delivery. Approved claims are settled as store credit valid 12 months, not a monetary refund.
