What Warli art is
Warli is a tribal painting tradition from the Warli people of Maharashtra, and it is one of the oldest surviving folk art forms in India. The work is made from three shapes — the circle, the triangle and the square — built up into stick figures of people, animals, trees and huts. Traditionally it was painted in white rice paste directly onto the mud walls of a home, usually by the women of the household, to mark a wedding or a harvest.
What the paintings show is ordinary life: people farming, dancing in a circle, carrying water, walking together. There are no gods and no kings in Warli art. That is what makes it different from most Indian traditional motifs, and why it reads as warm and human rather than ceremonial.
Warli on an everyday suit
The subject matter is the reason this print belongs on a Rozana suit rather than a festive one. Warli is art about daily life, and this is a suit for daily life. The figures give the fabric more to look at than a floral would, without asking for a special occasion to justify wearing it.
No lining needed
All three pieces are cotton, and the fabric is opaque enough to be stitched without a lining. That saves you buying extra fabric and paying your tailor to attach it, and keeps a layer of heat off you in summer.
Hand washable at home
This suit does not need dry cleaning. Hand wash it in cold water with a mild detergent, and dry it in shade rather than direct sun to protect the print.
Where it fits in your week
An office day, errands, a school run, a Gurudwara Sahib visit, a kitty party, an ordinary afternoon. Stitch the shirt as a straight-cut with palazzo for the easiest everyday shape, or as an A-line with churidar if you prefer something more traditional.
Stitching this suit
The suit is supplied unstitched, so the neckline, sleeve length and fit are yours to decide. It can be stitched up to size 5XL. Warli figures are small and distinct, so a simpler cut keeps them readable — heavy panelling breaks up the scenes. StudioJazz offers a stitching service; share what you have in mind and we will discuss it with you. Unstitched orders are dispatched within 48 working hours; stitched orders take 7 to 15 working days depending on the work involved.
Care
Hand wash only, in cold water with a mild detergent. Dry in shade rather than direct sunlight — sunlight is harder on a printed cotton than washing is. Wash separately the first time, as cotton prints can release a little colour on the first wash, and a strong orange more than most.
Shipping
Dispatched within 48 working hours of order confirmation and delivered across India in 3 to 7 business days. Free shipping on orders above Rs. 1,500. StudioJazz has shipped to 13 countries; international shipping is available on request.
A note on colour and print
Natural variation in colour and print placement is characteristic of cotton and is not a defect. Print placement on your piece may differ slightly from the photographs.
Frequently asked questions
What is Warli art?
Warli is a tribal painting tradition from Maharashtra, among the oldest folk art forms in India. It builds stick figures of people, animals and huts from circles, triangles and squares, traditionally painted in white rice paste on the mud walls of a home.
What do Warli figures show?
Everyday life — farming, dancing, carrying water, walking together. Warli art depicts ordinary people rather than gods or rulers.
Is this hand-painted?
No, it is printed. Traditional Warli is painted by hand onto walls; this is a printed cotton fabric using Warli motifs.
Does this suit need a lining?
No. All three pieces are cotton and the fabric is opaque enough to stitch without one.
Can I wash this at home?
Yes. Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent and dry in shade. It does not need dry cleaning.
What fabric is it?
Cotton — shirt, bottom and dupatta.
What's included and how much fabric?
Three pieces of 2.5 metres each — shirt, bottom and dupatta — 7.5 metres in total.
Is this suitable for summer?
Yes. Cotton, no lining, no heavy surface work — all three keep it cool through a long day.
Will the orange bleed or fade?
Wash separately the first time, as a strong colour can release a little dye initially. Dry in shade.
What cut suits a Warli print?
A simpler cut keeps the figures readable. Heavy panelling breaks up the scenes.
Can this be stitched to my size?
It can be stitched up to size 5XL, and the neckline, sleeve length and fit are yours to choose.
Do you stitch it, and what does that cost?
Yes, StudioJazz offers stitching. Charges depend on the design and the amount of work involved — message us and we will confirm the cost before you proceed.
