Hand block printed kalamkari

Kalamkari is a narrative print tradition from South India — figures, florals and borders drawn from temple cloth. This one is hand block printed: carved wooden blocks, inked and pressed onto the cloth by hand, one impression at a time.

That is worth stating plainly, because most kalamkari sold at this price is machine printed. We carry both, and we tell you which is which. Our maroon Chanderi kalamkari suit, for instance, is a machine print and its page says so.

What hand printing looks like

Repeats that are not mechanically exact. Impressions that sit heavier in one place than another. Small shifts in colour along the length.

That is the method showing, not a fault. Perfectly uniform kalamkari is machine kalamkari.

No lining needed

The cotton is opaque enough to wear on its own — one less layer, one less line on the tailoring bill.

How to wash it

Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Dry in shade. Wash separately the first time.

Red releases colour readily and block printed cotton more so than a machine print. That first separate wash is the whole precaution.

Who this suit is for

Everyday summer wear with something behind it. Red is a decided colour — it will be noticed, and kalamkari motifs carry their own weight.

Not the one if you want something quiet, or perfectly uniform. For a subtler kalamkari, look at our maroon Chanderi piece; for uniformity, a machine print will serve you better.

Care

Hand wash only, cold water, mild detergent. Dry in shade — direct sun fades block print faster than anything else. Wash separately the first time. Iron on medium while slightly damp.
