The print

The flowers are drawn in a stylised way rather than realistically — shapes suggested rather than copied — which gives the print a graphic, contemporary look instead of a traditional one. They are worked in a single contrast colour against the rust ground, so the design reads as clean and deliberate rather than busy.

Rust as an everyday colour

Rust sits in a useful place between a neutral and a colour. It is warm and earthy rather than bright, so it does not announce itself the way a strong pink or green would — but it is not beige either, and it does not disappear.

Care

Hand wash only, in cold water with a mild detergent. Dry in shade rather than direct sunlight — sunlight is harder on a printed cotton than washing is. Wash separately the first time, as cotton prints can release a little colour on the first wash.
