What pichwai means

Pichwai is a devotional painting tradition from Nathdwara in Rajasthan — cloth paintings hung behind the deity in temples of Shrinathji. The word means "that which hangs at the back." Its subjects come from the life of Krishna in Vrindavan, and the cow recurs throughout: Krishna was raised among cowherds, and in pichwai the cows are figures of devotion rather than decoration.

The design here is printed onto the fabric rather than hand-painted, but the motifs carry a meaning a general floral print does not.

Green and the Vrindavan story

Of all the colours a pichwai print can sit on, green is the closest to the story itself. Vrindavan is a forest — the cows in these paintings are grazing cattle, and pichwai artists have always worked green into the groves and pastures behind them.
