What Ajrakh is, and what this suit is

Ajrakh is a resist block-printing tradition from Kutch in Gujarat and Sindh across the border, practised for centuries by the Khatri community. The cloth passes through many stages of washing, resist-printing with mud and gum, and dyeing, with the pattern built up layer by layer rather than applied in one pass. The geometry is unmistakable — dense, symmetrical, built from repeating jaali and star forms.

This suit carries an Ajrakh-style print. It uses that visual language but it is not hand block printed in Kutch with natural dyes, and we are not going to imply that it is. Genuine Ajrakh costs many times this.

Why maroon is the right colour for it

Traditional Ajrakh is built on two dyes: indigo for blue and madder root for red. Almost every authentic piece is some combination of those, which is why deep red and deep blue are the colours the pattern was designed around.

Maroon sits squarely in that madder family. The geometry reads as it was meant to — dark, dense, warm — rather than being transplanted onto a colour the tradition never used. If you like the look of Ajrakh, this is closer to how you would actually see it.

A serious print on an everyday suit

Ajrakh normally turns up on a considered piece — a stole, a saree, something bought as a small investment. Here it is on a hand-washable cotton suit at everyday prices.

That combination is the point. You get a pattern with real depth to look at, on a suit you can wear to the office on a Wednesday and wash at home afterwards.

No lining needed

All three pieces are cotton, and the fabric is opaque enough to be stitched without a lining. That saves you buying extra fabric and paying your tailor to attach it, and it keeps a layer of heat off you in summer.

This suit does not need dry cleaning. Hand wash it in cold water with a mild detergent, and dry it in shade rather than direct sun. Wash separately the first time — a deep maroon can release a little dye on the first wash.

Hand wash only, in cold water with a mild detergent. Dry in shade rather than direct sunlight — sunlight is harder on a printed cotton than washing is, and a deep colour shows fading more visibly than a muted one. Wash separately the first time.
