A trailing floral vine runs the length of this shirt in two tones of blue, with small birds perched into the branches — the kind of detail that rewards a second look. The neckline placket is worked in a denser geometric pattern, and a fine white picot edging finishes the front opening. The dupatta carries the same blue scattered as smaller motifs, edged in matching picot.

Off-white and blue is a combination that stays quiet and still gets noticed. Good for a daytime function, a kirtan or gurudwara visit, an office day you want to feel put-together, or any occasion where you'd rather look considered than loud.

Before you stitch

We recommend lining the shirt. Muslin is fine and soft, and a lining gives the kurta better fall and opacity — worth doing on an off-white in particular. Taffeta is what we suggest. The lining fabric is not included in this set; your tailor can source it in off-white or a pale blue to pick up the embroidery.

Styling it

The embroidery covers most of the shirt, so keep everything else simple. A round or boat neckline lets the placket sit as intended, and a straight-cut kurta shows the vine pattern to its best. Silver or oxidised jewellery works better than gold here, and pearl suits the off-white beautifully. Resist adding a third colour — the blue and white are already doing the work.

Care

Hand-wash separately in cold water with a mild detergent. Do not wring or soak. Wash off-white pieces on their own, especially the first few times. Dry in shade, and iron on the reverse rather than directly over the embroidery. Muslin softens with every wash.
