A tonal print, and why it behaves differently
Most printed suits work on contrast — a light motif on a dark ground, or the reverse. This one does not. The flowers are printed in green on a green base, so there is very little contrast between motif and cloth.
The effect is that from across a room the suit reads almost as a solid colour, with just a suggestion of texture. It is only close up that you see the flowers. That makes it the most versatile kind of print to own: it goes everywhere a plain suit goes, including an office or a formal setting where a bold print would be too much, and it still has something to look at.
The flowers themselves are small and scattered rather than large or clustered, which is what keeps the surface quiet.
What rama green is
Rama green is a specific shade in the Indian colour vocabulary — a deep green with a distinct blue lean, sitting between emerald and teal. It is named for Lord Rama, who is traditionally depicted in that colour.
It is not bottle green, which is darker and cooler, nor parrot green, which is bright and yellow-leaning. Rama green sits between the two — rich enough to feel considered, deep enough not to show everyday marks.
No lining needed
All three pieces are cotton, and the fabric is opaque enough to be stitched without a lining. That saves you buying extra fabric and paying your tailor to attach it, and it keeps a layer of heat off you in summer.
Hand washable at home
This suit does not need dry cleaning. Hand wash it in cold water with a mild detergent, and dry it in shade rather than direct sun. For a suit you will wear often, that is the difference between something you reach for and something that waits for a trip to the cleaner.
Where it fits in your week
This is the one to reach for when you want to look put together without deciding anything. An office day, a meeting, a family lunch, a Gurudwara Sahib visit, errands, a kitty party. Because it reads as near-solid, it also takes a printed or contrast dupatta from elsewhere in your cupboard better than a busy print would — so the same shirt gives you more than one look.
Stitching this suit
The suit is supplied unstitched, so the neckline, sleeve length and fit are yours to decide. It can be stitched up to size 5XL. A tonal print is the easiest kind to cut — there is no repeat to match and no motif placement to worry about, so any silhouette works. StudioJazz offers a stitching service; share what you have in mind and we will discuss it with you. Unstitched orders are dispatched within 48 working hours; stitched orders take 7 to 15 working days depending on the work involved.
Care
Hand wash only, in cold water with a mild detergent. Dry in shade rather than direct sunlight — sunlight is harder on a printed cotton than washing is, and a deep green fades more visibly than a muted shade. Wash separately the first time, as cotton prints can release a little colour on the first wash.
Shipping
Dispatched within 48 working hours of order confirmation and delivered across India in 3 to 7 business days. Free shipping on orders above Rs. 1,500. StudioJazz has shipped to 13 countries; international shipping is available on request.
A note on colour and print
Natural variation in colour and print placement is characteristic of cotton and is not a defect. A tonal print in particular photographs differently from how it looks in hand — on screen it may read as a plain colour, with the flowers visible only in person.
Frequently asked questions
What is a tonal print?
A print in the same colour family as the fabric beneath it. Here the flowers are green on a green ground, so there is little contrast between motif and cloth.
Will the print show?
Close up, yes. From a distance the suit reads almost as a solid colour with a suggestion of texture. That is the point of a tonal print rather than a fault.
How big are the flowers?
Small and scattered rather than large or clustered, which is what keeps the surface quiet.
What colour is rama green?
A deep green with a blue lean, sitting between emerald and teal. Not as dark as bottle green, not as bright as parrot green.
Is this suitable for an office?
Particularly so. Because it reads as near-solid it works in settings where a bold print would be too much, while still having more character than a plain suit.
Does this suit need a lining?
No. All three pieces are cotton and the fabric is opaque enough to stitch without one.
Can I wash this at home?
Yes. Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent and dry in shade. This suit does not need dry cleaning.
What fabric is it?
Cotton — shirt, bottom and dupatta.
What's included and how much fabric?
Three pieces of 2.5 metres each — shirt, bottom and dupatta — 7.5 metres in total.
What cut suits a tonal print?
Any of them. There is no repeat to match and no motif placement to plan, which makes it the easiest kind of print to cut.
Is this suitable for summer?
Yes. It is cotton, it needs no lining, and it carries no heavy surface work.
Can this be stitched to my size?
It can be stitched up to size 5XL, and the neckline, sleeve length and fit are yours to choose.
Do you stitch it, and what does that cost?
Yes, StudioJazz offers stitching. Charges depend on the design and the amount of work involved — message us and we will confirm the cost before you proceed.
Do you ship internationally?
StudioJazz has shipped to 13 countries. International shipping is available on request — message us with your location before ordering.
